Thank you for having me
Who really is Babatunmise Agboola?
Babatunmise Agboola is an award winning gospel artist, based in the city of Ibadan, and also from the city of Ibadan, Orita- Merin to be precise. Halleluyah! I'm from a family of four. I'm a third of four children. Unlike every other artist that probably studied one thing or the other, around art and all, I studied English in the university and I'm single. For me, gospel music is a blessing. Every other thing is after gospel music.
Actually . you told us you are from Ibadan.
Yes, Orita Merin.
Are you also an Alumni of the University of Ibadan ?
(laughs) Not at all. I graduated from Leads City University.
It's still in Ibadan
(laughs) Ibadan naa ni(its still Ibadan) .
Since when have you been into music ?
Professionally, five years.
Why did you go into gospel?
For me, gospel is good news and I think I want to be a part of the good news. I want to be a carrier of the good news. My background also influenced my decision
Did your parents support your career?
I'm thankful and grateful to the parents I have. At first, they weren't in support but I was able to eventually convince them with positive results . Every parent expects something good from their children.. As a child, when you get to school, your ideas will change, your hobbies will change , your talents and the in-built things you are having will change. It wasn't so easy convincing my parents I wanted to go into music. The result showed them that I was serious with my work.
There's a news that went viral about you that you have been signed into a top label in Nigeria. How true is it?
(laughs) Spaghetti Records. It's owned by Mike Abdul . He's a friend, a father, and a mentor. I love him. I'm an affiliate of Spaghetti Records and there's really no official document saying Babatunmise is an artist on Spaghetti Records. Spaghetti is family. Maybe I've signed and I'm not aware. (laughs) . The truth of the matter is most of the things I do, Mike Abdul is involved. We are always together, so yes, you can call me Spaghetti.
Tell us about your New album?
We bless God for what he has done so far. There is mobilisation everywhere including the social media. Nobody tells a successful story without challenges. My testimony is that while we were mixing the last song, the system crashed. To the glory of God, the song
was retrieved which is very unusual. To the glory of God my album is ready.
Why did you choose 'Ogo Ola' as the title of your album.
It means wealth in God's glory. My album is supposed to be titled 'Yes' . However , the feedback we got from 'Ogo Ola' after recording it was wonderful .
Which of your tracks is your favorite?
I don't have a favorite.
Are you a fan of Nigerian Hip Hop songs?
I love some circular songs. Some of them are actually good. When I listen to some circular songs, I feel inspired and blessed. Some of them are better than some of the so called gospel songs .
Do you agree gospel music is not lucrative?
When I hear people say gospel music is not lucrative , I do imagine if it's the same gospel music I'm into they are taking about. Whoever it's not lucrative for should check his or her life. For me, it's going to be gospel all the way. Gospel music should be made to complete with circular music also. We should make it look good because it's good new
How are you doing now in the industry?
I thank God. Few years back , I can remember saying I was going to feature popular gospel artist in my tracks. People made jest of me but I saw the possibility, though it was not feasible then. I thank God for what he has done so far.
What are some of the challenges you have faced and how have you been able to overcome them?
Every challenge is big. Your success depends on how you are able to use it for your own benefit. Finance is a challenge. I went to meet my producer and I told him I wanted him to produce my album. He told me each of the track would cost #120,000 and I wanted to produce twelve tracks. I was like 'where do I get over #1 million for this album' . Some couples of weeks later, he invited me to Lagos and told me he would produce it without taking anything from me. A #1.2million album was produced for me without paying a dime
Finally, as a gospel artist, is it proper to charge a church for for a performance.
I usually answer this question by explaining to people that my crews will always get paid for any program we are invited to minister. That is why we are loosing so many instrumentalist to the circular music industry.
Churches should support our ministry.
