What a bright Moment today in our great city, ibadan. You are specially welcome to another edition of fashion and beauty where you get the best tips and Gists on fashion and beauty. I remain your host Ige Olamide..
Today on the show I have a very special personality International Fashion Veteran, Award Winning Mrs Tinu Smith
Can we meet you ma'am?
My name is Tinu Smith, I am the CEO of Datina designs. I've been in the fashion business for over 20 years now, I even have a fashion school in which we have trained over 400 students I love what I do I enjoy it tremendously"
Ma'am can you share with us why you chose fashion designing I mean why is it a choice of profession for you?
"let me start by saying that my mum used to be a fashion designer. Initially, I never thought of going into fashion designing. I would have love to do communication which was what I studied in school. However, I found out that I picked up an interest in the business and since I have started I haven't regretted it for one day. I love what I do, I love to dress people up. Like the saying you dress the way you want to be addressed"
Ma'am these days we see ladies put on the men's wears like the agbada, the dashiki and the likes... I just want to know after these styles go, you know styles they come and go what do you think will spring up again?
You know it's not strange if you look back at the early '50s, '60s, '70s and so on, most of the things we are seeing right now has been in existence they rolling and rolling. But as a fashion designer what we do is make the styles come back nice not looking exactly like the way it use to be.. We put little changes to make it look nice
The modeling industry in Nigeria is a bit boring unlike outside the country where designers actually create shows and have models showcase their wears it's a bit boring in Nigeria..What do you think the fashion designers don't indulge the models more in Nigeria?
"I think the industry is growing gradually if we look back to the last five years what we have now is not what we used to have, things are changing dynamically, the fashion industry is growing and then most of our fashion designers in Nigeria are not into runway they just collect clothes from people to sew for them. Just a few are into runway.. I hope as the industry gets bigger we begin to get more jobs for the models"
I'm sure the models will look forward to that...
Ma'am can you share with us the challenges you faced before becoming such a big name
Hmm! starting was very very tough because there was financial constraints I can remember I started with just one machine
Then getting a space wasn't so easy. It was just me but gradually the business started growing. But what I did was, I was able to put whatever I got back into the business to grow it. And it has actually yielded for me for the past over 20years I'm actually 22 years In the business, it's been tough especially the financial aspect.
But being tenacious and being consistent having faith that it'll grow and if you are good at what you do and if you are able to give back to the society it will surely give back to you"
What advice can you give the youth of today?
I would like to say that where Nigeria is going if you don't have a skill you will suffer. I know their are white collar jobs being a doctor a lawyer I'm not saying they are bad but as a Nigerian youth of today it is the best to have a skill as Nigeria is moving towards entrepreneurship . Entrepreneurship is the way for us I have doctors that are into fashion designing and other skills because where Nigeria is going to the white collar jobs are not enough for everybody to go around.
Especially for the youth entrepreneurship is the way to go instead of having the give me mentality let's have a way of giving back to the society, look into yourself what are you passionate about, it can even be a hobby which will later be a source of income for you. Can you imagine where the makeup industry has gone to now we have people like Tara who are doing really well she even has her own products,
In the last ten years can you think you can just make it big in just painting faces. We know their are more people even better than Tara, let our young ones rise up. Everything you have can yield."
If you Meet Mr President today what kind of advice are you going to give him concerning the fashion industry?
I'll like him to invest in our young ones, we don't have enough fashion school I mean standard ones, if we look outside the country there are lots of fashion schools that people can actually go to.
And even those of us that have the passion to do it we don't have enough resources like I have a fashion school but I can't take more than a particular number of people at a time because there are no resources I don't have enough capacity.
He should help the young ones. Out the country on the US, France fashion is doing great in fact it is a huge part of their country because the area is an area that can yield more for the nation."
Ma'am it's been really nice having you on the show today we hope to see more of you... And until next week till we come again with something more interesting for you stay tuned to smile documentary.
I remain your host Ige Olamide thank you.
